Work in Portugal

Portugal, much like many other European nations, offers a variety of employment contracts, including permanent, part-time, fixed-term, and intermittent arrangements. The country boasts a pleasant maritime climate, a high quality of life, safety, and a welcoming environment. Portugal has implemented initiatives to attract job seekers, and residents holding a permit can take advantage of the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax status, which comes with tax exemptions.

After securing a job offer, the process for obtaining a Portuguese work visa is divided into three steps:

  1. Your employer initiates the Work Permit application. They should do this after extending the job offer to you but before your travel to Portugal.

  2. You proceed to apply for a Work Visa at the Portuguese Embassy. Once you have obtained the Work Permit, you must submit an application for a work visa at the Portugal Embassy, which will enable your entry into the country.

  3. Upon your arrival in Portugal, you are required to apply for a Portugal Residence Permit for Work through the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF). This permit allows you to reside in Portugal for an extended period.

Types of Work Visas in Portugal

Portugal, being a member of the European Union (EU), allows citizens from other EU member countries to work in Portugal without needing a permit or visa. However, they must apply for a residence card within six months of relocating to Portugal for work purposes.

Non-EU citizens, on the other hand, must acquire a visa from their home country to travel to Portugal. Portugal offers three types of residency visas:

  1. Permanent residency visa
  2. Resettlement visa for relatives of Portuguese citizens
  3. Resettlement visa for relatives of permanent non-citizen residents in Portugal

Once the appropriate visa is obtained, the employee can travel to Portugal. They must convert this visa into a residence permit within four months of arrival. Additionally, a separate work permit is necessary to work legally in Portugal.

Requirements for Obtaining Portugal Work Visas In addition to a completed visa application, individuals seeking a visa must submit the following documents:

  1. A valid passport with at least two blank pages.
  2. A letter of invitation from the employer or other relevant documentation explaining the purpose of the trip.

  1. A valid Portuguese residence visa.
  2. Proof of accommodation in Portugal.
  3. A valid passport.
  4. Two color passport photos.
  5. Relevant tax documents.
